From April 7 - April 13

There was a wide range of responsibilities during Week 5 of my internship with Mark Abrams, including sessions in the studio, mixing, coaching, and professional growth. It felt as though a perfect blend of behind-the-scenes skills and practical expertise.

The week began with some quiet attention on home vocal tuning and then our usual Monday check-in at the studio. Mark and I worked through the objectives for the week, and I even got to meet another one of his clients who came by to drop off some files. It’s always cool to get a glimpse into how many different people he collaborates with.

Tuesday was all about content and community. I handled the promotion for a new episode of VMS Sessions and sat in on a mixing session. I also sat in on a Chris Graham Coaching call with a few other engineers from across the state, country, and even overseas—it was really inspiring to hear how others are approaching their work and workflows. Later, I attended an event held by mastering engineer Brian Lucey, which was super cool since I was able to catch up with a few people and meet a lot others!

Wednesday was packed with back-to-back stereo and Dolby Atmos mixing sessions. I also did a bit of admin work to help onboard Mark’s manager into Motion, the scheduling and calendar platform we’ve been using. We’re trying to streamline everything to ensure everyone stays in the loop on upcoming projects.

Thursday was another full day—I sat in on a call with a Puremix client about a potential shoot date, watched an Atmos mix session in progress, and helped create some content for MAM’s social media. I’m starting to feel more confident in juggling different creative and logistical tasks at once.

On Friday, I jumped into tuning vocals in the studio for a track that has a deadline coming up. I also sent out email blasts for VMS Recording and MAM and sat in on another mix session. By the end of the day, I had two more tracks on my plate to tune over the weekend and into next week.

Saturday and Sunday were lower-key, but still productive. I entered some new tasks into Motion to keep things organized and started working on those new vocal edits. It’s satisfying to see how everything I do—no matter how small—fits into the bigger picture of a project’s success.

Every week I get more insight into the structure and spontaneity of this industry. Whether it’s being part of creative decisions, managing timelines, or simply making sure a vocal sounds just right, I’m learning how to contribute meaningfully to the whole process.
